The "I'll never be hungry again" oath was not the only sequence filmed at Lasky Mesa (now part of the Ahmanson Ranch): The beginning of Part 2's cotton picking scenes (and a couple of others that were cut out before the movie's release) were also filmed at Lasky Mesa. (Eg., the scene where Scarlett slaps a complaining Suellen for talking about hating Tara) Another moment at Lasky Mesa is the over-Melanie's-shoulder angle where she opens a window and yells at both her father and her two sisters saying that the gunshot they have all just heard going off was only Scarlett cleaning out a revolver and its going off by mistake and scaring Scarlett and everyone "to death." These were obviously scenes they could not film in the Backlot in Culver City (Forty Acres Backlot) right next to the Tara set Exterior they had built there -- because the residential houses around the backlot would have been easily glimpsed by the camera. As it is, Tara had to be photographed using careful angles and matte paintings used by the special effects department.Javierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06495820165544576665noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8174269516657329609.post-43919990001229586472017-05-24T09:41:19.534-04:002017-05-24T09:41:19.534-04:00That wrestling scene made me gasp the first time I...That wrestling scene made me gasp the first time I saw it in the theater. This is something that happens ALL THE TIME, and kids don't usually understand it for what it really is... but the look on Little's face shows he at least knows that there's something there, even if he doesn't know what. The whole scene is constructed so perfectly in image and sound (I mean, EVERYTHING in Moonlight is, but that especially), and it's so emblematic of the film as a whole, how it presents these things that most people go through but that we don't usually get to see onscreen in such a way.

LOVE this article! Turns out the scene you're talking about, the reverse angle, aka "I will never go hungry again", was the one shot from the film that MGM shot on Lasky Mesa, a hill just above where I live. The cinematographer(s) (either Ray Rennahan or Ernest Haller, both credited on the Academy Award won for it) cleverly used the mesa, which is actually a sloping hill. They shot the scene looking slightly uphill, which let them crop out the hills in the distance. It was likely shot in the late day, facing west, so what was likely a beautiful sunset looks like a sunrise in Technicolor.

- Brian HemsworthAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05087277431690424965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8174269516657329609.post-39495257550617686412015-09-04T16:05:59.853-04:002015-09-04T16:05:59.853-04:00I love posts like this. What I also love about this shot is that bizarre lighting fixture, which feels like an extension of her head in the two left-ward Carols -- it's this pinkish blur (matching her coloring) extending from where her face should be, as if she's dissolving into a mist or refracting into abstract light; her edges are not her own. She's being swallowed by her environment.
