Tarantino and Kaufman....But Not Together

Though man, how awesome would that be? Answer: probably not very, actually, since they both have very distinct styles that are incompatible with one another.

Anyway.

Yesterday, it was reported by Franco Nero that Quentin Tarantino was working on a Western, specifically a spaghetti Western that would star Nero, Treat Williams and Keith Carridine called The Angel, The Bad, and The Wise, but this was hearsay at best. Today, however, Tarantino himself confirmed that his next film will indeed be a Western, and though he did not mention Nero, Williams, or Carridine, he did say that he will reteam with Inglourious Basterds' Christoph Waltz for the film. There is, of course, no final script yet, so it could be a while before this goes before the cameras and into theaters. But Tarantino's making a new movie! I'm excited; I'm a big fan of Tarantino's films (I even enjoyed Death Proof, though that film is definitely his weakest effort so far). And I'm a big fan of Westerns, too, so this is more or less a match made in heaven for me. Of course, I expect it to be more Sam Peckinpah than John Ford.

Then, today also brought the news that wildly-inventive screenwriter Charlie Kaufman has two new projects in the works, the first since his 2008 it-gets-better-with-each-viewing Synechdoche, New York. The first is a yet-untitled satire about how all of the world's leaders come together to make decisions on various issues, which sounds ripe for comedic gold a la Dr. Strangelove. Even better, the film will be directed by metaphysical-partner-in-crime Spike Jonze, making this their first film together since 2002's Adaptation. The other film is a comedy called Frank & Francis, which details the antagonizing relationship between a director and a movie blogger. This one is going to be directed by Kaufman himself as a follow-up to Synechdoche, which was his directoral debut. Needless to say I'm looking forward to both films.

What about you? Excited about any of these?
