Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

Oh, the high school comedy: a hallmark of the Eighties. John Hughes more or less made his entire career out of the genre, and to this day it remains a nostalgic favorite of teenagers everywhere (for its universality, of course; there's not a teenager today who was alive during the decade). And in this genre, Fast Times at Ridgemont High stands as one of the classics. Here's a fun fact: I actually had to watch this movie for a class I'm taking called (I kid you not) Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n' Roll: German Philosophy in Modern Youth Culture (How awesome is that? Hit Me With Your Best Shot: Mean Girls (2004)

Originally, this film was covered in 2010, but since I hadn't participated back then - and Nathaniel is opening it for new additions - I couldn't help but chime in.* It's remarkable that we're actually coming up on the tenth anniversary of Mean Girls , which debuted in theaters on April 30, 2004. For one thing, I was in eighth grade at the time, and the film seemed like a portentous omen of what the next four years would be like for me (don't worry, I turned out fine; I found my "clique" with the band geeks and chorus kids, and we were awesome). But what's really astonishing is how successful the movie continues to be. Upon its release, Mean Girls did fine at the box office, but it was hardly a smash. But thanks to a fan base that is passionate and constantly growing, the film is as enormous as ever, thanks to cable re-runs, DVDs, endlessly quotable ...

Hit Me With Your Best Shot: "Moonlight" (2016)

*This post is part of the "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" blogathon at The Film Experience * I apologize for the short length of this post. I'm trying to get back into the groove of blogging now that I'm officially a Master of Fine Arts (supposedly) and beginning my transition into a doctoral program. I have a lot of thoughts on this film, an excellent choice for the return of my favorite TFE series, that I will hopefully post later. Moonlight is a radical film. Not necessarily in narrative or aesthetics, though the former masterfully builds on the cumulative evolution of the characters and the latter are evocative and beautiful. The film is not even that radical in representation - there have been films about black gay men before. But Moonlight is radical in that it is a film about black gay men that captured mainstream attention, playing in more theaters than its predecessors and winning awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture.
