Oscar 2011 Concerns #1

This isn't really my number-one concern (though it is up there), but the first of a series of things that I've been reflecting on in terms of this year's Oscar race. I'm hoping you'll see several of these in the future, with more probably showing up around the time I'm working on updating my predictions again. Gee, is it really October already? Where did the year go....................

I've been thinking about The Iron Lady. Namely, the more I think about it, the less it seems like a good thing and the more I see it being a fiasco. At the moment, it's sight-unseen the odds-on favorite to land Meryl Streep another nomination and perhaps her long-in-the-works third win. But is it really? Again, nobody's seen the movie yet. We've been drawing these conclusions only on press stills and a very short teaser that showcases that yes, Streep can look and sound like Margaret Thatcher. Mimicry is not necessarily Oscar poison (they like it a lot, actually), but we don't really know yet if there's a real performance here. Namely most of my fear comes from the director's chair, which is filled by Phylida "I can point a camera somewhere, therefore I am a director!" Lloyd. Lloyd previously "directed" Streep in Mamma Mia, and though she was easily the best part of that over-lit, Pierce-Brosnan-belting disaster, it wasn't so much of a performance so much as Streep merrily gallivanting around a Greek island. Are we certain we can get a legitimate performance here too?

What are your thoughts on this one? Does it make you nervous too?

I have no doubt that Streep will knock this out of the park, no matter how bad the film is. I thought she was quite good in the teaser trailer.
